FREELANCE OPPORTUNITY: Media Communications Consultant (Qatar based) – March 2024

Outline of the role

AMS Consultancy’s Media Agency is looking for a Media Communications Consultant based in Doha, Qatar, to join our global media team in supporting a major international development foundation. The client has impacted the lives of millions of young people around the world, and has many inspiring stories to tell about their work and their global community.

This is an exciting and inspiring opportunity for someone with 3+ years of experience in media and communications roles. Ideally you will bring good relationships with media contacts in Qatar and/or the Middle East. 

You will have the chance to impress influential leaders in the communications and international development sectors, with your quick thinking, creativity and attention to detail.

The Consultant will receive constant support from the AMS team of experienced international and Middle East media experts, and a full induction and training package.

Person specification / skills required

  • Proven positive relationships with media contacts and the ability to pitch effectively and secure coverage. Experience dealing with media personnel, ideally across print, online, broadcast and podcasts.
  • Strong work ethic. We all work hard and we share credit for success where it is due.
  • Teamwork: supports others and accepts help when they need it. Excellent communicator internally as well as externally.
  • Fluent spoken and written English and Arabic. Ability to read and write accurately in Spanish or French would be an additional advantage.
  • Organisational skills: never misses a deadline; can respond to changing priorities; able to prioritise work effectively.
  • Independent worker; able to manage own workload and work remotely as well as in an office setting.
  • Skilled user of MS Word, Excel, Powerpoint, and Google Docs, Drive, Sheets and Slides. Experience of media monitoring and distribution platforms an advantage. Experience using AI tools for efficient workflow also an advantage.
  • Cultural awareness; experience working within diverse teams.

Deliverables and responsibilities

This role includes, but is not limited to, the following tasks: 

  • Media monitoring
    • Use tools (training provided) to produce daily media monitoring in English and Arabic from Sunday to Thursday.
    • Share insights and media opportunities based on media monitoring e.g. relevant trends and discussions.
  • Newsletter
    • Compile monthly newsletter for partners based on stories produced that month.
    • Produce quarterly newsletter for partners (feature article, and highlights from the quarter).
  • Communications planning
    • Produce monthly Forward Plan in coordination with Client and AMS team.
    • Develop communications plans for events or announcements, using existing templates.
  • Media liaison
    • Produce first drafts of statements or press releases as required.
    • Distribute stories using a media distribution platform (training provided).
    • When capacity allows, support Senior Media Consultants with external pitching, especially to Middle East / Qatar based media.
  • Reports and analysis
    • Produce analysis and reporting in response to client requests – for example, researching a media topic, personality, or trend.
    • Produce bi-weekly media coverage reports.
    • Produce a monthly report including media outreach, coverage, deliverables completed, with supporting documentation.
    • Join a monthly “lessons learned” review with client and AMS team.
  • Other
    • Attend up to one recurring client meeting per week, with a focus on advice, collaboratively coming up with story ideas, and evaluation.
    • Attend meetings as needed including one recurring client meeting per week to plan stories and outreach, and a monthly “lessons learned” review with client and AMS team.
    • Use a workflow spreadsheet and a time tracker to log tasks and hours (guidance will be given).
    • Other ad-hoc tasks, subject to prior agreement, within agreed hours, and within the scope of the role.

Notes:

  • Any quantities mentioned above are to be considered as estimated and subject to change based on operational needs and capacities, as agreed upon.
  • These tasks will be completed with support and input from the team and the End Client.

Key terms and conditions

  • 30 hours average per week.
  • Compensation: up to $3,000 per month depending on skills and experience.
  • The contract will initially be from 1 March to 30 April 2024, with the possibility for extension.
  • This role works the Qatar working week, i.e. Sunday to Thursday. Availability all day on Sundays is required; other days are flexible.
  • The successful candidate is required to be on-call for urgent work that may come up on Fridays and Saturdays. If called upon, the candidate will be able to take time off in lieu to compensate for these hours.
  • The consultant will work two days (16 hours) per week in the office in Doha; the rest of the time they will work flexibly from their choice of location. We require you to have reliable internet at your chosen workplace.
  • The working language is English for meetings and emails.
